Lamu island is the cultural hub of Swahili heritage, a mix of African, Arab, and Indian descendants. Life is slow here; donkeys and old dhow are the primary means of transport. Lamu Town is Kenya's oldest living town which has been inhabited for over 700 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lamu is part of the ancient Arab trade route, and it is believed that the Lamu port, which the original traders established, has existed for at least 1000 years. The white sandy beaches of the Lamu archipelago are believed to be amongst the best in Kenya.

Itinerary

Day 1 - 14 Sept.

Upon arrival at JKIA airport in Nairobi, take a flight to Lamu Island at 9:40 AM arriving at 11 AM. Once we arrive, we will check in at our beautiful villa and have lunch.

Day 2 - 15 Sept.

We will start the day with an early sunrise yoga session. After breakfast we will discover our village and visit some of the local shops. In the afternoon, we will go on a walking tour to explore Lamu's old town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 3 - 16 Sept.

At 11 am we will visit Shela Women’s Association for a samosa making class and delicious swahili lunch cooked by the ladies. In the afternoon we will enjoy sailing on a traditional dhow at sunset.

Day 4 - 17 Sept.

Optional early morning kayak in the mangrove channels. Today we will visit Taqwa ruins and learn the history of Lamu.

Day 5 - 18 Sept.

Day trip to Manda toto for snorkelling opportunity and swimming at an empty beach. We will also have fresh bbq live cooking on the dhow.

Day 6 - 19 Sept.

Today we will attend a fun event by Ubunifu's art center for children. After that we will watch sunset on the beach.

Day 7 - 20 Sept. Time to say goodbye to the beautiful Lamu island. Our domestic flight will leave at 11:20 AM. It will arrive at JKIA international airport at 2 PM.

2 Oct - Day 1 : Arrival Tashkent

Explore Tashkent's old town. Today, we will visit Barak Khana Seminary, Tila Shaikh mosque, and archives known for exhibiting a rare copy of the Quran written by the third Caliph Othman. We will also visit Chorsu Bazaar, Kukeldash Madrassah. Visiting the ceramic workshop of Akbar and Alisher Rakhimov – this is a unique place, a paradise in the old city part of Tashkent. Later, visit the Museum of Applied Arts, go on an excursion to Independence Square, and Amir Temur Square.

Overnight in Tashkent.

3 Oct - Day 2 : Tashkent – Samarkand (Speed train Afrosiab 07:30-09:40)

In the early morning, we will take the train to Tashkent. After arrival, we will visit Gur Emir - the mausoleum of Great Tamerlane, Registan Square, which was the heart of Samarkand for many centuries. Visit Hunarmand Artisans Center to see the artisans at work. We will also visit the grandest structure of Amir Temur's times, Bibi-Khanum, Silk Road bazaar, and Shahi Zinda necropolis. Overnight in Samarkand

4 Oct - Day 3 : Samarkand

We will visit the paper making workshop in Konigil village (10 km from Samarkand). Later, we will see the Afrosiab museum and excavations, Ulugbek's observatory, and the Mausoleum of the Prophet Daniil. Overnight in Samarkand

5 Oct - Day 4 : Samarkand – Bukhara (speed train Afrosiab 09:50-11:20)

Transfer to the railway station of Samarkand to take the train to Bukhara. Sightseeing tour of Bukhara: Visit – Lab-i-khauz ensemble, the pool and chaikhana of which is the modern centre of traditional Uzbekistan: Madrassah Nadirkhon Devanbegi, Khanaga, Mogaki Attari mosque, Poi Kalon minaret and mosque, Madrassahs Aziz Khan and Ulugbek. Visit Ark Fortress, Balakhauz mosque, mausoleum of Ismail Samanid, Chashma Ayub. Overnight in Bukhara

6 Oct - Day 5 : Bukhara

Continue an out-of-town sightseeing tour to visit the Sitora-i-Mokhikhosa, the summer residence of the former emir of Bukhara. Excursion to Bahauddin Naqshbandi Mausoleum, famous Sufi spiritual leader of this region in the 14th century. Return to Bukhara to visit different workshops near Lyabikhauz. We see block printing, metal chasing, suzani embroidery, carving, and miniature painting. Overnight in Bukhara.

7 Oct - Day 6 : Bukhara - Khiva (480 km)

Morning drive to Khiva by the famous Kizil Kum desert (Red sands). See desert flora and fauna: unique saksaul trees, other desert vegetation, and different mammals. Stop at Amudarya River Bank. Overnight in Khiva.

8 Oct - Day 7 : Khiva

Upon arrival in Khiva, check in to the hotel. Later, we will go on a walking tour to visit Kalta Minor, Kunya Ark, Madrassah Rakhimkhon, and the Mausoleum of Pakhlavan Makhmud. Enjoy the view of the completely ancient Khiva, Friday mosque, and Tashauli Palace/harem. Overnight in Khiva.

9 Oct - Day 8 : Crossing to Turkmenistan via Shavat border (60 km) - Darvaza

Morning transfer to the Uzbek-Turkmen border point Shavat. Complete border formalities and drive to Turkmenistan. After completing all the formalities, we will drive for the overnight stay near the gas crater Darvaza. See the flaming crater and take some photos, have a picnic dinner, and camp close to the Dervaza. Overnight in Darvaza.

10 Oct - Day 9 : Darvaza – Ashgabat

We will leave early and drive to Ashgabat. We will stop at Yerbent, which can give us an idea of what desert life looks like. After Yerbent, we visit the Village of Bokurdak, about 105 km before Ashgabat. Visit a local family's home and see the traditional activities: embroidery, pichi (traditional bakery), and baking bread. Have lunch cooked by this family members. Continue driving to Ashgabat. Overnight in Ashgabat.

11 Oct - Day 10 : Ashgabat

After breakfast, start your day with a visit to the famous Tolkuchka Sunday Bazaar. This vibrant market attracts people from all over the country, who come to buy and sell camels, cattle, poultry, amulets, carpets, jewelry, and many other items. We'll continue the tour and visit the Ferris Wheel, the Kipchak Mosque, the Arch of Neutrality, and the Monument of Independence. We will also visit the National Carpet Museum. The museum showcases a rare collection of extraordinary handmade carpets and exquisite carpet articles. Overnight at the Diwan Hotel.

12 Oct - Day 11 : Ashgabat – Mary

Start your day at the Fortress of Old Nisa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the first capital of the Parthian Empire. Next, visit the Spirituality Mosque, the largest in Turkmenistan, built between 2002 and 2004 as a mausoleum for the first President. Then, explore the remains of the Ancient Fortress of Gokdepe, constructed in 1869, significant in Turkmenistan's history against Imperial Russia. Afterwards, visit a local private stud farm where you can see horses and take a cooking class. You'll learn to make gutaps, a type of pie, and dograma, a traditional broth dish.

Finally, transfer to the airport for your flight to Mary. Overnight in Mary.

13 Oct - Day 12 : Merv

We will visit Bayram-Ali, a modern reflection of the historic suburb of Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Merv is a key archaeological site in Central Asia that has played a significant role in the Silk Road for over 2,000 years. The archaeological park spans 1,200 hectares, allowing us to explore the main features of this "wandering city." After our visit, we will drive back to Ashgabat and transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

  • Fast-track visa and airport transfer to the hotel.
  • River tour in Shatt Al Arab by Ashari boats and walk in the Cornish of Basra.
  • Walk in old Basra with Shanasheel houses, Ashar Canal, and the Old Basra Bazar.

Day 2 / Saturday, 18 Oct - Overnight: Nasiriyah

  • Early morning in Qurna (1:15 minutes drive), the point meeting of Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
  • Explore the Tree of Adam - An ancient jujube tree of Knowledge mentioned in the Bible.
  • We will drive to Chibayesh and have a marshland experience.
  • Sightseeing tour in numerous floating villages, such as the Gardens of Eden, where we will see different birds, fishes, buffalos, reeds, and plants and meet the people of Ahwar. It is one of the largest ecosystems in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Visit the historical city of Ur to visit the Great Ziggurat of Ur (1:30 hr drive), a UNESCO World Heritage site and the former capital of Mesopotamia during the Sumerian time.

Day 3 / Sunday, 19 Oct - Overnight: Karbala

  • Head to Najaf (4 hours drive) and we will walk to the area of the shrine of Imam Ali
  • Visit the grand bazaar of Najaf.
  • Drive to Karbala (1 hour) and learn the history and significance of the city to Shias around the world.
  • Walk to the area between the two shrines of Imam Hussain and his brother Abbas in Karbala.
  • Enjoy the energy of Karbala during the night, having local food, sweets, and its famous Skanjabeel drink.

Day 4 / Monday, 20 Oct - Overnight: Baghdad

  • Visit Babylon (1 hour drive), walk the historical city, passing through Ishtar Gate and Procession Street.
  • Drive to Baghdad (1 hour) and explore the city.
  • Old Baghdad tour via Al Rasheed Street, visiting various local markets such as the copper market "Al Safafeer," Souq Al Sarai - the stationary market, Al Mutanabbi Street, and the antique market, "Khan Al Mudalal."
  • Visit heritage sites such as Madrasa Mustansiriya School and the Abbasid Palace.

Day 5 / Tuesday, 21 Oct - Overnight: Baghdad

  • Start the morning with the most famous Iraqi breakfast thick-cream and pastry breakfast (Qaimer and Kahi).
  • Old Baghdad offers many local food restaurants along Hayder Khana street, such as Kubba Al Sarai, Oum Kalthoum Shawarma. We also will grab a treat from both Al Shahbender cafe and Haj Zbala Juice shop.
  • Visit the Iraq Museum to learn about civilizations that passed Iraq through time.
  • Tour of Baghdad's iconic monuments like the Martyr's Monument and statues from Arabian Nights.
  • Enjoy a cultural Baghdadi Chalghi music night.

Day 6 / Wednesday, 22 Oct - Overnight: Mosul

  • 8 AM After Breakfast we will head to Samarra (2 hours drive). This historical city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Visit Hatra (2 hours drive), an important historical religious center with its strategic position along caravan trade routes.
  • Head to Mosul (1:30 hours drive), the second-largest city in Iraq, which lies on the Tigris River in the north and is near the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh. From 2014 to 2017, ISIS occupied the city, causing extensive destruction, especially to historic sites, and leading to a fierce battle for its liberation.

Day 7 / Thursday, 23 Oct - Overnight: Mosul

  • Discovering the reconstruction of the old city, especially Al-Nuri Mosque, Al Hadbaa Minaret and Al Tahira church.
  • Walk through the area where the last and most intensive battle against ISIS took place.
  • Free time in Mosul and at night visiting the cafe house for local music performances. This place used to be a hospital for ISIS during the battles.

Day 8 / Friday, 24 Oct

  • In the early morning, we will visit the Plains of Nineveh. Have Breakfast with a local Christian family in Bahzani and learn their stories and the history of the place.
  • Head to Lalish and have a unique experience with the Yazidis of Iraq.
  • Head to Erbil by noon and make a tour of the Citadel's Market
  • Departure to Erbil Int. Airport.

Day 2 - 29 Nov

We will attend Lamu cultural festival in Lamu town. We will also go on a walking tour to explore Lamu's old town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 3 - 30 Nov

We will start the day with an early sunrise yoga session. After breakfast we will discover our village and visit some of the local shops.

Day 4 - 1 Dec

At 11 am we will visit Shela Women’s Association for a samosa making class and delicious swahili lunch cooked by the ladies. In the afternoon we will enjoy sailing on a traditional dhow at sunset.

Day 5 - 2 Dec Today we will visit Taqwa ruins and learn the history of Lamu. At 4 PM we will attend a fun event by Ubunifu's local chdilren. The children hand made and painted their own outfits for this fashion show. After that we will watch sunset on the sand dunes.

Day 6 - 3 Dec

Day trip to Manda toto for snorkelling opportunity and swimming at an empty beach. We will also have fresh bbq live cooking on the dhow.
