Namibia - Journey Through Desert, Wildlife & Coast

This journey covers Namibia's signature landscapes, the wildlife-rich savannahs of Etosha National Park, the ancient rock art and red rock landscapes of Damaraland, the Atlantic coast at Walvis Bay, and the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Saturday, 5 July • Arrival in Windhoek

Arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport and transfer to the hotel in central Windhoek (about a 45-minute drive). The rest of the day is at leisure to recover from the flight and settle in. Windhoek sits on a high plateau at 1,650m, so the evenings are crisp in July — pack a warm layer for dinner.

Day 2 - Sunday, 6 July • Windhoek → Etosha National Park

After breakfast, depart northward through Otjiwarongo and the Waterberg region — a long but scenic drive of roughly 5 to 6 hours covering around 450 km. Enter Etosha through the Andersson Gate and embark on an afternoon game drive en route to Halali Resort, set in the heart of the park between Okaukuejo and Namutoni. Halali is famous for its floodlit waterhole, which often draws elephant, black rhino and hyena after dark — a perfect first evening in the bush.

Day 3 - Monday, 7 July • Etosha National Park Full Day

A full day exploring Etosha. Set out early — first light is prime game-viewing time as predators return from the hunt and herds gather at waterholes. Work your way west along the southern edge of the Etosha Pan, stopping at productive waterholes such as Salvadora, Sueda and Okondeka. Exit through the Galton Gate in the late afternoon and continue a short distance to our Lodge inside Etosha National park which overlooks its own private waterhole on the park's western boundary.

Day 4 - Tuesday, 8 July • Etosha → Damaraland

Leave Etosha behind and head into Damaraland, one of the most geologically striking regions in southern Africa. The drive (around 4 hours) takes you through ochre-coloured plains studded with welwitschia and basalt koppies. Afternoon visits to the Twyfelfontein rock engravings — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 2,500 petroglyphs carved by San hunter-gatherers — and, time permitting, the Organ Pipes basalt formations and Burnt Mountain. Twyfelfontein Country Lodge is built into the red rock itself.

Day 5 - Wednesday, 9 July • Damaraland → Walvis Bay

A long but rewarding drive south to the coast (around 6 hours), with a dramatic change of climate from desert heat to the cool Atlantic. Pass through the moonscape terrain south of Brandberg and skirt the Skeleton Coast before reaching Swakopmund, where you can pause for lunch (own account) at one of the seafront cafés. Continue 30 km south to Walvis Bay and check in at Pelican Bay, overlooking the lagoon and its famous flamingo flocks. The afternoon is free — wrap up warm; the coast is markedly cooler than the interior.

Day 6 - Thursday, 10 July • Walvis Bay & Sandwich Harbour Location: Atlantic Coast Stay: Pelican Bay Resort Meals: Breakfast only A free day at the coast with optional activities (bookable locally). The signature experience is the Sandwich Harbour 4x4 excursion — a half-day adventure along the only place in the world where the Namib's giant dunes plunge directly into the Atlantic. Alternatives include a marine cruise to spot dolphins, pelicans and Cape fur seals, sandboarding on the dunes outside Swakopmund, or a quad-bike trail through the desert. Walvis Bay is also an excellent place simply to rest, with seafood restaurants along the waterfront.

Day 7 - Friday, 11 July • Walvis Bay → Sossusvlei

Travel inland and south through the Kuiseb Canyon and over the Gaub and Kuiseb passes — about 5 hours of dramatic desert driving. Arrive at Sossusvlei Lodge by mid-afternoon. The lodge sits directly at the Sesriem gate of Namib-Naukluft Park, giving you unbeatable access for tomorrow's sunrise. Afternoon visit to Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge carved by the Tsauchab River through million-year-old conglomerate.

Day 8 - Saturday, 12 July • Sossusvlei Sunrise & Dunes

An early start — depart before sunrise to be at the gate when it opens, then drive 60 km into the park to reach the dunes at first light. Climb Dune 45 for the classic Sossusvlei sunrise, then continue to Sossusvlei itself and walk across to the haunting Deadvlei — a white clay pan punctuated by 900-year-old blackened camelthorn trees against towering apricot dunes. Return to the lodge late morning to escape the midday heat. Afternoon at leisure for the pool or an optional hot-air balloon ride at dawn the next morning.

Day 9 - Sunday, 13 July • Sossusvlei → Windhoek → Departure

After an early breakfast, depart on the scenic drive back to Windhoek via the Remhoogte or Spreetshoogte Pass — around 5 hours through the Khomas Hochland mountains. Arrive in Windhoek by mid-afternoon with time for a final lunch and last-minute shopping at the Namibia Craft Centre. Transfer to Hosea Kutako International Airport in time for your evening departure flight.
